Simple Remedies for Relief of Oily Skin and Face

Reducing Skin Oil is the Best Way to Combat the Greasy Skin Problem

Jun 27, 2009 Christopher T. Reilly

Overly oily skin can appear shiny, look unappealing, and foster pimples and blackheads. This collection of remedies can help relieve the effects of oily skin and faces.

Although it is commonly believed that oily skin is the result of a diet rich in spicy foods, oils and fats, the National Institute of Health (NIH) states, “genes and hormones play the key role in whether or not you have oily skin,” and that diet has almost nothing to do with it.

Even though an oily face may be a natural occurrence, there are some things sufferers can do to care for oily skin. The NIH and many experts agree that the single most important thing a person can do is to keep skin clean by using a mild soap and warm water. Don't clean with harsh cleaners, since they will remove essential oils from the skin and the body will react to the irritation by producing more oil.

Experts also agree that washing the skin too much can be harmful and twice per day is usually enough. If it is felt more is needed, use astringents instead.

Astringents

Topically applied astringents cause a mild reaction of substances which dry and protect the skin. This is created by the alcohol in the astringent which absorbs moisture and has a drying effect on oily or acne skin. Moreover, this can be used all day long. Select any product that lists alcohol as an ingredient.

If there isn't an astringent handy, make some by mixing cider vinegar or lemon juice with a little cool water. Cover hair and close the eyes, splash the solution on the face, and wipe with a cotton ball.

During the summer, try freezing the solution in an ice cube tray. Run a cube over the face when the weather is hot. The ice cube is not only cold and refreshing, but it helps keep the face dry.

Facials and Masks

This refreshing facial can remedy oily skin: put 1 teaspoon of salt in a spray bottle and fill with lukewarm water, then spray on the face. Blot dry with a towel. For a facial steam, heat a wet towel in the microwave and form a tent, allowing the steam to permeate the face.

According to many beauty experts, masques made of mud or clay can also be beneficial, soaking up oil from the pores. Make a mixture of 3 tablespoons of both fuller's earth and mineral water and apply to the face. Leave for 20 minutes, then rinse it off with warm water. A masque can also be made with oatmeal and warm water and applied to the face for 10 minutes.

Removing Makeup with Oily Skin

Mix warm water and just one teaspoon of powdered skim milk, apply to face gently, wipe it off with tissues, and gently blot dry.

There are also prescription creams which absorb oil or prevent its production on the skin. See a physician for recommendations. With these tips, it is possible to alleviate the effects of excessively oily skin, leaving the face looking fresher and healthier.
