Creams for stretch marks can help heal damaged skin.

The right stretch marks treatment can give worn out skin a more vibrant appearance. Stretch marks occur when the connective tissue below the surface of the skin expands and then is torn due to rapid growth caused by weight gain or pregnancy. Rapid weight loss can also cause stretch marks.

Stretch marks commonly occur on the breasts, buttocks, thighs, and abdomen, but they can form anywhere on the body. The stretched skin loses its elasticity, leaving the appearance fine lines and discolorations. Other visible symptoms of stretch marks include red, pink, or purple streaks, or bulging lines. The medical term for stretch marks is striae atrophicae.

Women are more susceptible to developing stretch marks. However, men can get them as well. Weight lifters sometimes get stretch marks due to their rapidly expanding muscles. Teenagers also can get stretch marks due to the hormonal changes that occur during puberty. Certain hormonal medical conditions, such as Cushing's syndrome can also cause stretch marks.

Complete stretch marks removal is not likely, but there are various treatment options that can reduce their appearance. Most treatments work best if a person starts using them before stretch marks occur. Pregnant women, body builders, and other at risk groups should start a daily stretch marks prevention program and stick to it.

Tretinoin Stretch Mark Creams

Tretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A. Retin-A is among the popular stretch mark creams. It contains tretinoin and is used as a stretch marks treatment. It works by thinning the skin's surface. This allows the cream to reach the layer underneath and stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen increases the skin's ability to withstand stretching and reduces the likelihood of marks.

Tretinoin and other creams for stretch marks have been studied for effectiveness. One such study was published in the Archives of Dermatology (May 1996). 22 patients were given either Retin-A or a placebo during the six month study. Researchers found that 80 percent of those who received Retin-A had a significant reduction in the width and length of their marks. Creams for stretch marks work best if they are used on new stretch marks.

Stretch Marks Prevention

Stretch marks prevention is the best form of protection. Eat foods that are rich in protein. Keep the skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid foods that are high in unhealthy fats. These fats can be stored in the buttocks and stomach, and can cause swelling which can lead to stretch marks. Fresh fruits and vegetables are beneficial for the skin.

An article published in the Archives of Family Medicine (February 1995) notes the importance of maintaining a healthy diet in order to keep the skin strong enough to endure prolonged stretching without tearing tissue. While complete stretch marks removal is not realistic, a person can prevent them from occurring in the first place.
